Exploring the World: Top 4 Travel Destinations for Black Travelers

As a black traveler, the main question that lingers in my mind is "am I going to feel safe in this country"?
Anti-blackness is not only an issue in the Unites States. It is embedded in the structural institutions of most countries in the world. Though disheartening, black women often need to go to extreme lengths to ensure they will have a good experience when traveling abroad, having a negative experience in a country you do not know your way around not only ruins your trip, but can be a dangerous situation to be in.
As a 25-year-old Black traveler who has had great experiences, and the not so great, I have developed opinions and gathered insights, from other black travelers. In our opinions, here are the top 5 places for black travelers to have a great and safe experience.
France

Why go: As the most visited tourist destination as of 2023, France is one of the best places to visit if you are Black. With its large black population, France, particularly Paris, offers a welcoming culture. With its refined and sophisticated cuisine, why would you not want to visit France?
Things to do: France has a rich Black-American history and an emergence of Parisian retail. In addition to this, France offers a plethora of historical sites and art attractions included but not limited to the Louvre, Arc de Triumph, Eiffel Tower, and Basilica of Sacré-Cœur. You can also enjoy a 1-hour Seine River cruise tour to see iconic Paris monuments.
2. Mexico

Why Go: With Mexico's diverse culture, historical attractions, and blissful beaches, it is no
surprise that Mexico is among the top 10 most visited Countries by U.S citizens. On top of this, Mexico has its own rich Black history and has adapted to tourism in a way that feels familiar to Americans.
Things to do: Mexico is a great place to relax on a beach while enjoying a drink. Known for its many beaches and cenotes I am sure this is going to be on your to-do list when visiting. Historical landmarks like Tulum, the Arch of Cabo. If you are looking for more adventure, you can take a hike at the Sierra Notre Mountains, which are filled with ecotourism businesses, like mountain biking and group hiking trips. You really can't go wrong with a trip to Mexico.
3. Ghana

Why Go: Known for their lush forests, diverse animal life and rich culture & cuisine, Ghana is a perfect place for a destination vacation. Many black American's go there to immerse themselves in tradition and reconnect with their culture. There is also ease of travel to neighboring countries such as my home country, Togo and Nigeria, another popular destination among Black American travelers.
Things to do: One of the most visited sited in Ghana is Cape Coast Castle, which is now considered a world heritage site. As one of the forts built by colonizers to support the slave trade, this site shows the dark history of the past. The capital city, Accra, also offers modern shopping malls and restaurants for day attractions. . In addition, Ghana offers an active nightlife that is said to be "never ending". You will not be bored here!

4. Greece

Why Go: Known as the second friendliest Country in the world, the Greeks live by a value known as philoxenia, which translates to "friend of the foreign". People of color are generally not subject to preferential treatment and are invited to take part in cultural activities. An additional benefit is that Greece is extremely safe for solo women travelers and is regarded as one of the safest places to travel to in Europe.
Things to do: From taking a dip at the Myrtos Beach to visiting the historical city of Athens to visit the Acropolis of Athens, there is no limit to the fun things that Greece has to offer. As one of the most romantic destinations, Greece is also the perfect backdrop for your romantic destination, with the encapsulating and famous views from Santorini, and the relaxing atmosphere of Crete.
